Buddy accusations laid to rest PDF Print E-mail

The Hawthorn Football Club has released a statement today informing readers that the matter of Lance 'buddy' Franklin, a night club and some ladies has come to ahead internally. The club is satisfied with Buddy's version of events and will take no further investigation into the alleged incident.

For those that missed the story, Franklin was escorted from the CQ Bar in central Melbourne on Saturday night, hours after the Hawks had lost their first match of the season to the Western Bulldogs in Launceston. Two women claimed they had been verbally abused by Franklin and had a drink thrown at them.

The Hawks take on Essendon on Saturday Night.

Sam Mitchell Puts The Team First PDF Print E-mail
Written by Andrew Clark

Hawthorn Captain Sam Mitchell has made the ultimate individual sacrifice and has accepted a reprimand for a tripping charge on Melbourne's Simon Buckley. This means that the equal brownlow medal favourite is now out of the running for the AFL's highest individual honour. For Sam, the decision to lead his team against the Western Bulldogs rather than risk sitting on the sidelines for a week, was an easy one.

"To get out of it with a reprimand and get to play on the weekend, I think any player in the competition would take that rather than some individual accolade" he told channel 9. "The risk of missing a game of footy, especially at such an important part of the year against a good quality club that is going really well, it was a pretty easy decision".

The Hawks take on the Western Bulldogs at Aurora Stadium this weekend.

McGlynn and Crawford Suspended PDF Print E-mail
Written by Andrew Clark
Wednesday, 21 May 2008 07:43

The casualties from Hawthorn's 38 point turn around win over Port Adelaide keep on coming. The Hawks have already lost Brent Guerra to a hamstring injury and have now lost Ben McGlynn for 4 weeks and Shane Crawford for 1 week due to suspension. These players join Luke hodge who is currently recovering from a hamstring injury sustained against Collingwood in round 7.

McGlynn had pleaded guilty to the charge of rough conduct against Kane Cornes, but contested the grading of his action as reckless, arguing he had exercised the requisite duty of care by rolling over Cornes' back when contact became inevitable. The tribunal did not agree, so McGlynn was hit with the base demerit points for the offense, and the additional carry over poins from a round 6 striking charge, received 4 weeks on the sidelines.

Shane Crawford accepted a one game suspension for striking Port ruckman Dean Brogan. This will be the fourth match that Crawford has missed this season due to suspension. A senior player of his caliber should really be leading by example and it's disappointing to see him miss another match so early in the season.

To the left, to the left... The Buddy tactics keep on coming PDF Print E-mail
Written by Andrew Clark
Thursday, 15 May 2008 08:03

AS LANCE "Buddy" Franklin lined up for a set-shot at goal, a trio of opponents scurried into position. They formed a line along Buddy's left from the man standing the mark foxing, waiting as though for the flag to drop to charge at him.

It was as if Franklin was on the right-hand point post and they didn't want him to play on and widen his angle in his shot at goal. But Franklin wasn't on the boundary line, he was 45 metres out and on no particular angle. In his case, the others know how he likes to kick the ball and that means running out on an arc on his left side to swing his boot through the ball. They wanted to deny him that arc, and upset his natural kick.

So the three players hovered in a line, call it the Buddyline, until Franklin took his first step out wide and the play-on call was given for them to run in to pressure and tackle.

It is not a new tactic but it is one seemingly being used to some effect against the AFL's most irresistible force.

Against Richmond, whether by design or coincidence, it became clear that when Franklin was shooting at goal he was doing so with Tiger players along his left-hand line. The result was that he had to run straighter in his kicking action and he converted poorly (1.7 that day). Certainly not all that inaccuracy would be ascribed to this theory but it would appear it did not hurt.

Collingwood in the next round also presented similarly, and players could regularly be seen asking the umpire how close they could get as they lined up, waiting for Franklin to step wide on his kicking arc.

I agree Susgra, It's all too easy to get caught up in the hysteria sometimes. You can't help but see the players who are up in flashing lights (Buddy et al) and it's all too easy to forget that one of the reasons that they perform so well is due to the support they receive; not only from fellow players, but everyone at the club.

That's one thing I think Clarkson is doing well (from an outsiders point of view anyway). Keeping the team level headed. We have been in a similar situation before. I think it was 2001 when we were 9 and 1 and proceeded to miss the finals

Having said that, I don't think it takes anything away nothing from Cyril's performance. The 'kid' at 18 has shown more heart and determination in his short career than many established players ever have or ever will.

Beau Muston Sidelined Again PDF Print E-mail
Written by Andrew Clark
Sunday, 13 April 2008 16:55

Scans yesterday confirmed a tear to Beau Muston's anterior cruciate graft in his left knee.  Muston left the field during the first quarter of Saturday’s pre-season semi-final against the Adelaide Crows at AAMI Stadium.
Beau Muston

The promising midfielder had previously undergone reconstructive surgery in 2005 in his final year of the TAC Cup before being picked up by Hawthorn with their second round pick, number 22 overall, in the 2005 National Draft.

Although Muston was training following the initial knee reconstruction further medical examination showed signs that the graft and screws had loosened slightly and it was decided that the graft should be replaced through additional surgery.

The young Hawk now faces another period of rehabilitation and the Club will continue to support Muston in his quest to make a full recovery.

Stuart Dew To Miss A Month PDF Print E-mail
Written by Andrew Clark
Sunday, 13 April 2008 16:45

Hawthorn midfielder Luke Hodge says Stuart Dew could be out for a month after he sustained a hamstring injury in the dying stages of the club's 15-point win over Fremantle at Subiaco Oval on Saturday. "It's just a basic hamstring, so he'll be three or four weeks, I think,” Hodge said.

While Dew's absence is a blow for the undefeated Hawks, there should be plenty of cover for the former Port Adelaide premiership player, with Tim Clarke and Benny McGlynn looking like they'll be available for selection against North Melbourne this weekend. The Hawks will also welcome back midfielder Jordan Lewis , who missed the first two rounds due to suspension.

Mark Williams could also be available, but Hodge admits that with the forward unit performing as well as it is, finding a spot for the 24-year-old could be challenging.
