Hawthorn superstar Buddy Franklin etched his name into the record books by being the first player in 10 years, and the first indigenous player ever to kick the magical 100 goals in a season. Franklin kicked Four goals for the match but hit the milestone in the 25th minute of the first quarter and brought the house down at Telstra dome.
Marking the ball about 35 metres out on a slight angle the crowd rose to their feet and willed the Sherrin through the large uprights for a goal. Seconds later the field was alive with thousands of fans all eager to help the Hawks spearhead enjoy the moment. Buddy later revealed in the Herald Sun that he defied the plan to run off the field immediately instead deciding to celebrate with team mates and ultimately the thousands of Hawks and Carlton fans who 'invaded' the oval. The match took a backwards focus from then on with the Hawks dominating all areas of the ground to establish a handy, and ultimately insurmountable lead. Instead focus shifted to Carlton forward Brendon Fevola. Despite the Blues best efforts he was only able to manage 99 goals for the season which will surely leave him ruing missed chances throughout the season. The Hawks now take on a possibly depleated Western Bulldogs outfit on Friday night. Hawks coach Alistair Clarkson has been quick to mention that form, in which the Bulldogs have been largely lacking over the last 7 weeks,is no idication of how teams will perform in the finals. It's set to be a Friday night blockbuster.
