Hawks Crush Magpies - Lose Hodge in the process PDF Print E-mail

Mick Malthouse wanted to see where his players 'were at' in the lead up to Saturday's clash against the Hawks, well I think he got his answer; nowhere. Even with Luke Hodge for half the match the Hawks smashed collingwood 24.10(154) to 13.11(89). To top it off 10 of Hawthorns 24 goals came in the final term which prompted coach Alistair Clarkson to praise his fitness staff after the match.

The Hawks are set to lose Luke Hodge after his pulled his right hamstring minutes into the 3rd term. Sam Mitchell ran rampant with 39, mostly effective, possessions and received sportal man of the match honors for his trouble. Roughead performed well throughout the match and kicked 6 as did Buddy who had 6 goals after a very quiet start to the match. Mark Williams has shown that injury hasn't hampered him with 5 goals straight for his efforts.

Trent Croad hasn't had a goal kicked on him in 2 matches this season after he stopped Travis Cloak from kicking a major. Medhurst managed a sympathy goal after Campbell Brown hurled him into the ground after the balled spilled loose. There were late changes for both teams. Magpie utility Ryan Cook came in for the danger man Anthony Rocca while Chance Bateman was replaced by big Stuart Dew who was instrumental in clearing the ball from half back as well as setting up a few goals of his own.

There is no other word to describe Dale Thomas other than soft. He is more interested in a nomination for a Logie then playing for the hard ball, probably to protect his manicure. Jordan Lewis was his usual 'forceful' self, letting whoever he was playing on know exactly where they were and what they were up against.

Next week looks like it could be the match of the round after Port Adelaide thumped Essendon at AAMI stadium, however, come to think about it, Collingwood did the same thing last Friday...

Hawks saved by a bag of points PDF Print E-mail

There weren't many who were expecting a close match against the Tigers on Sunday, but it happened, and the Hawks nearly brought upon their own downfall with an appalling 14.22 (106) to 15.4 (94). The Tigers kicking straight to stay with the Hawks for the whole match and threatened for the lead close to the death. The Tigers trailed by as little as 5 points mid way through the final term.

The Hawks were their own worst enemy with their spate of poor kicking in front of goal which started no less than 2 minutes in with Roughead missing an easy shot less than 10 meters from goal. No one was spared, and Buddy Franklin would be excused for having flashbacks to his 2007 match against the bulldogs for his 1 goal 7. His one goal came from an unselfish Cyril Rioli who handballed over the top of the Richmond defense to a lonesome Franklin in the goal square.

Hawthorn Defeat Lions

The Hawks have pulled off a sterling victory to beat the Lions at the Gabba, where they have not won since 2000! Hawthorn finished the match 19.16(130) to 17.16(118). If you were not lucky enough to catch the game you can view the match Highlights by clicking here (best to use Internet Explorer). But What A Game! Jonathon Brown barely got a touch (didn't get a goal thanks to the return of Croad) and the two leading goal kickers in the league booted 15 between them (Buddy with 8 and Bradshaw with 7).

In a surprising move Brown started in the midfield with task of matching up on superstar Luke Hodge who finished with 18 possessions and 1 goal 1 behind. Brown may also have to front up to the tribunal for a late hit on Sam Mitchell who was awarded a free kick and a gifted goal for the pleasure.

It certainly was an actioned packed match with many lead changes during the course of the game. The boys are really looking strong. With good wins against Adeliade, Fremantle, Brisbane, North Melbourne and Melbourne it's hard not to get excited about the season ahead.

Hawks Thrash The Demons By 104 PDF Print E-mail
Written by Andrew Clark

HAWTHORN has exploded into the 2008 season in the best fashion possible with a comprehensive 104-point thumping of Melbourne at the MCG on Sunday evening.

The match almost resembled a training run for the Hawks as they systematically destroyed the hapless Demons across every line to run out winners, 23.16 (154) to 6.14 (50).

So convincing was the win, exhilarating forward Lance "Buddy" Franklin was literally beating the Demons off his own boot at three-quarter time, having outscored the depleted line-up 5.3 (33) to 2.10 (22).

The Hawks were five men down with Campbell Brown, Luke Hodge, Shane Crawford and Jordan Lewis suspended and Mark Williams a late withdrawal, but proved their depth extends beyond their senior players with a spirited performance from some of their younger stars.

Grant Birchall was again in fine form with 23 possessions, while debutants Cyril Rioli and Cameron Stokes showed plenty of promise with exciting antics around goal.

Stokes, who ended with two goals, made himself known with an impressive snap in the third term, while Rioli bounced off the turf after a high tackle from Brock McLean to end with a respectable 13 disposals and an incredible final-term major where he sidestepped two players to goal from 25 metres out.

The Hawks' other big off-season acquisition in Stuart Dew made himself at home in his first home-and-away match in the brown and gold with two goals – the first of which saw him shrug off two players deep in the side's attacking 50 and split the big sticks from the top of the goalsquare.

Not to be outdone, Sam Mitchell and Chance Bateman contributed all evening with a combined 63 possessions, while Tim Boyle again proved himself a worthy member of the attacking structure with a handy 2.2.

While the scoreline suggested otherwise, it wasn't all doom and gloom for the Demons. Missing Jared Rivers, Colin Sylvia, Clint Bartram and Matthew Bate, they too were down on experience, but still look to have found a player in 20-year-old Simon Buckley, while Nathan Jones worked tirelessly through the middle.

However, there were plenty more positives for the Hawks. After a quick start and quarter-time lead of 28 points that was extended to 41 by the long break, the side could have been forgiven for cruising to an easy win over an undermanned side.

But the domination at the clearances and sterling support from the defenders saw the goals continue to rain down. By three-quarter time, the Demons had booted just two goals – and the Hawks had four individual players who had either equalled or bettered that tally.

In the final term, the brown and gold-clad players were queuing up to etch their names in the goal-kickers list. Interrupted only by two six-pointers from Demons' forward Russell Robertson and one from Brad Green, the Hawks ended on an eight-goal note of euphoria as players and supporters celebrated an amazing start to the year.

The Hawks will travel to Perth next weekend to meet Fremantle on Saturday night at Subiaco, while the Demons will need to regroup in time for their Saturday afternoon clash with the Western Bulldogs at the MCG.

What a night, my head is still pounding! The Hawks fought back a third quarter slumber to continue on to a 15 point win over the Dockers last night at Subiaco Oval - 16.16(112) vs 14.13(97) and it's been a long time coming for Fans in W.A. The score line could have been much worse for the Dockers who kicked the last 4 goals of the match to finish with a respectable total.
